So we decided to start a garden this year. Thought it would be fun for the kids and save a little cash at the grocery store. We worked hard this spring to build our raised bed. I carefully picked the plants I wanted to grow and placed them in the bed in a well thought out "companion gardening" technique which I gleaned from a book (thanks Laila:)) . We were all so happy to see green in just a few weeks. Amazingly, the little weed like plant that came home in a styrofoam cup from preschool has morphed into two 6 foot tall sunflowers! I have been bragging to all the neighbors to come and collect their spinach, lettuce, herbs, etc... because I have more than enough to share. I was quickly humbled the other day as I got my pan ready to make my first of many loaves of zucchini bread (which of course I would deliver to all the residents of Harleysville and beyond with my superhomemaker cape on).
I began shredding the 6 inch green veggie when much to my surprise it seemed a bit fleshy... hmm... feels kind of like a cucumber... smells kind of like a cucumber... by golly it even tastes like a cucumber! Oh well... not too bad for a first garden attempt. Now my family is hoping the tomatoes turn into strawberries:)
